Piece questions the intersection of religion, sexuality, and race as a recontextualization of Adam and Eve. Just as the apple is the first sin of mankind, lusting after another woman is the ultimate sin. Like the first bite, it is representative of the Genesis of all of humanity. Its physical asymmetrical cut means that when titled, hierarchical symbols are played with. On its side, they are on uneven footing, the higher woman an allusion to Adam (the man) and seeing God (a heavenly connection), a play on how Biblical figures look up to the sky for guidance and a role reversal: the woman holding the apple like Adam, looks down to the other. When titled, they are equals, women acknowledging and loving each other. This series serves to answer what it means to be American, and this is meant to challenge the archetypical “God-fearing” white American man. This is a play on that as two sapphic women of color.
